Mistakes Damaging Your Solid Wood Floor And Tips On How To Prevent The Damage

Solid wood flooring has a nice aesthetic finish and lasts long, especially when kept under the right conditions. It's important that you observe key solid wood flooring maintenance practices so that you get to protect your floor from common problems that arise. Below are key tips to help you avoid major problems associated with solid wood flooring that most people experience.

Cracks and Board Splits

You may find that your wooden floor has some cracks, or the boards attached have a gap in between; gaps appear between two boards, and they may be present in more than one area. Heat and moisture changes lead to the expansion and contraction of solid wood flooring. If you fail to monitor and regulate the heat and moisture levels in the house, then your wooden floor is likely to crack or have splits.

Buy a good wood moisture meter for your home and use it to check the changes in humidity. You will then be able to figure out whether to lower or raise the moisture levels in your house. For example, in the case of low humidity during dry winter seasons, you can use a humidifier to raise moisture levels in the house. Consult a professional flooring company on the best moisture and heat levels to maintain.

Cupping

Solid wood cupping will make the edges of one or a few boards to rise higher than the center, such that the board will curve inwards. Cupping occurs as a result of moisture absorption. Some common problems that may lead to cupping include leaks from the drainage systems, a leaking dishwasher or washing machine, house flooding and a leaking roof.

To avoid cupping, make sure you solve any plumbing problems that may get the floor wet. Spills should also be cleaned out and dried up as soon as possible to prevent penetration into the wood. Also, make sure you inspect your floor for any wet spots so that you can identify the source of moisture in good time.

Scratches and Dents

The presence of foreign particles and objects on the floor is one issue that leads to dents and scratches. Also, the impact that results from things such as furniture and high-heeled shoes will severely dent your solid wood floor. The best precaution is to ensure that you protect your floor throughout from damage.

Sweep your wooden floor, preferably every week, and vacuum it every two weeks. Proper cleaning will remove debris and objects that often scratch and dent the floor. Also, use rubber protectors on the heels of your furniture. Remember to also place runner mats or carpets on high traffic areas, such as the entrance, corridors and the dining area.
